[Review] Gateway : The 1st Nintendo 3DS Flashcart

Gateway is the pioneer of flashcart technology that can read digital rom of Nintendo 3DS games in any regions (EU, US, JP, etc) without worrying too much about Nintendo's region lock system (you can say that it's our savior to play any Nintendo 3DS games from the 'dark side'). I can say it from dark side because we will play it through illegal digital copy, the game files that already has *.3DS format (pretty much the same like *.NDS format on Nintendo DS).

Packaging

The packaging is almost simple, there's no manual paper on it but you can check the gateway website for more information like new update kernel and how to make it works on your Nintendo 3DS handheld.  With 70 until 90 US Dollar (IDR 700,000 - 900,000 in my country) you can get the Gateway flashcarts, the blue card for installing the gateway and the red one for playing your 3DS games. The price seems very contrary for what we got , at least Gateway team make eye catching box (i'm not collecting box though).

Pros & Cons

+ You can play any Nintendo 3DS games (of course !) using the red card and also you can still playing the old Nintendo DS games on the blue card, but still only games that requires firmware lower than 4.5. But I guess there's plenty Nintendo 3DS games with interesting gameplay.

+ Easy to use, means the manual from Gateway website is very detail and make us able to understand quickly about how to install the flashcarts and how we insert the game.

+ The Blue Card Gateway also can be read in Nintendo DS handheld.

- Gateway flashcarts only support original firmware from 4.1 until 4.5. If you have lower than that you can update through the original Nintendo 3DS game that has force update feature to any firmware version from 4.1 until 4.5. But if your firmware is higher than 4.5 , you can't using the Gateway.
- Gateway doesn't have multirom feature, means that you can play 1 game only using 1 micro SD card. Although inserting game into the micro SD card is very easy, it still takes much time to put it in micro SD (depends on your micro SD card quality) and if you have bigger micro SD, the rest free space is wasted due to the current Gateway can only read only 1 game.
- The spring inside the red card is really not useful, even you don't need to push harder the micro SD card.
- Pretty expensive.

Conclusions

Although Gateway is very expensive compare to any flashcart that already release I still recommend it because it is the pioneer/the original one not the clones and at least it's gives you some guarantee that your Nintendo 3DS handheld is safe from brick  (well it still depends on some acts that may trigger the brick). Actually we can play any Nintendo 3DS games with requirement firmware higher than 4.5 by updating the gateway firmware into 2.x b (beta version) but it still has bad rumor like it can brick the device and etc. The Blue card of Gateway has a great compatibility too for the latest Nintendo DS games, it said that the blue card is the clone from R4 Wood. We can still see the good side from Gateway, one game for one sd card will letting you to focus into one game (pretty much the same like when you play using original cartridge)compare with the multirom that make you confuse about which game that you should finish first .
